"All who have accomplished great things have had a great aim, have fixed their gaze on a goal which was high, one which sometimes seemed impossible." - Orison Swett Marden Everyone who has achieved something truly great will assure you of the importance of setting goals. You probably already know that you need to set Goals because quite simply, without them you have no target programmed into your mind. Without a clear Mission and the firm resolution that you absolutely will get to the destination you have identified, you will almost certainly fail to accomplish anything really significant with your life. This is because you will be unable to easily identify the right actions to take. Actions that Wallace D Wattles in his classic book The Science of Getting Rich calls efficient action but which today, we are more likely to call effective action. Without clear Goals, you will be unable to distinguish between action that will take to toward the completion of your Mission and other demands which will also be made upon your time. This what Stephen Covey means when he talks about important action and what he calls non-important action (unimportant action). He says that important actions are those that pertain to your Mission, your Roles and your Goals. Your Goals are the individual, quantified, measurable steps you must take to get you to where you want to be - to fulfil your Mission. So when you get into Goal-Setting, it is not sufficient to begin asking yourself questions like:- What kind of house do I want to live in? What kind of car do I want to drive? How much money do I want to make? Sadly, I hear these sort of ideas repeated constantly from well-meaning people who don't fully understand the importance and power of a well-crafted Mission Statement and properly-set Goals. Don't make things like the big house, the flashy car or the huge salary your Goals. Why not? Because if you focus your time and effort on the business of making money or the pursuit of wealth as your primary Goal in life, it will increase the probability that you will end up in some line of work for which you are not well fitted or will not enjoy doing. You are no doubt aware that the Bible warns against making the pursuit of money your primary Goal - indeed it says this in a few places. It also says however, that if you focus your efforts on achieving God's will for your life, then you can expect the material things you need to be provided. Sometimes I hear this principle expounded as something like this: chase the money and it will run away from you; concentrate on providing service to others and the money will chase after you! So here we have an important key for achieving real success in life because I believe that it is true that God has planted, within your heart, some deep desire you were born to achieve. There is something special for you to accomplish in this life and the place to look to identify that something is within. Life does indeed hold a purpose for YOU. You first need to search your heart to find out what this deep desire is - you might call it your Life Purpose or Vocation or Calling. Then, when you know what that deep desire is, you need to work at refining it. You must get that desire into words and work on it until you have a carefully worded Mission Statement for yourself. When you have done that, write it down and display it somewhere you can regularly see it - display it anywhere you like just so long as you can see it and read it everyday. Now you can get down to some proper Goal-Setting. You need to quantify three or four Goals (no more than that) each of which represent a step towards the accomplishment of your Mission. When you have done that, write them down and also display them somewhere you can regularly review them. This process - as simple as it seems - is an absolutely crucial first step to achieving success in your life. When you are absolutely positive that you know exactly what you want to achieve, you will begin to notice all kinds of apparent co-incidences starting to happen in your life. There is nothing mystical about this, but you will begin to see opportunity where you would otherwise have missed it; and that is a promise. But you must, must, must actually do it if you want to achieve real success with your life (and I know you do). I had known this stuff (head knowledge) for years before I actually got around to the doing - but it was in the doing that I eventually proved to myself, like so many before me, that it actually works. You have absolutely nothing to lose by following these simple steps, but you have everything to gain. So do the soul-searching. Write down your Mission Statement and your Goals. Display them somewhere prominent Keep reviewing them. Keep looking at them every day. Keep reading your Mission Statement. Keep reading your Goals. And Expect a Miracle because that is what is going to happen!
