Drivers caught using their mobiles at the wheel can currently be fined only BD5, under a ministerial decree. But a new law is on the way with fines ranging from BD50 to BD500 and a possible six months in jail, depending on the circumstances.
It has been drawn up by the General Directorate of Traffic and parliament is expected to vote on it after the summer recess.
The current campaign includes distributing thousands of leaflets, with signboards on various highways, said Interior Ministry police media director Major Mohammed Bin Daina.
